Purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide learners with a broad understanding of the South African healthcare landscape and the implications for medical schemes, medical scheme administrators and public sector healthcare delivery. The course includes an overview of the legislative framework within the context of past, present and proposed policies.
Course Structure:
History of healthcare in South Africa: including health systems;
Socio-Economic Factors and the Burden of Disease.
Legislation: Present and Proposed:
- SA Constitution;
- National Health Act;
- Medical Schemes Act No 131 of 1998 and its regulations;
- Medicines and Relates Substances Control Act.
Healthcare Infrastructure and spend:
- Public Sector;
- Private Sector;
- Informal Sector.
Global healthcare issues - Factors influencing the delivery of healthcare globally.
